An ABC News hidden camera captures a waiter holding glasses near the rim, where a patron would put his/her mouth to drink. Inset: a Petri dish containing bacterial growth from hands that were not thoroughly washed. (Image Credit: ABC News) I went undercover at 10 restaurants in three states to find out which spots were the germiest. The results were surprising: Visible goop didn’t always translate into bad bugs, and some spotless surfaces harbored major microbes. No matter where the germs are, how can you protect yourself if you’re concerned? Since restaurant seats, tables and menus can be contaminated with bacteria, order your food and then head to the restroom to wash up before eating. Lather your hands for a full 20 seconds, then flip the faucet off with your forearm and open the door with your paper towel.

Both the FAA and Boeing are certain to face questions about the approval process for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. An official with Japan’s transport safety board says four US officials, including two Boeing representatives, have arrived at an airport in western Japan to inspect a 787 jet that made an emergency landing earlier this week. The ANA jet landed after the pilot smelled something burning and received a cockpit warning of battery problems. The Wall Street Journal reports that in approving the Dreamliner, the FAA “relied exclusively on data generated by Boeing” that indicated the plane’s lithium-ion battery “featured redundant safeguards that were essentially foolproof. ” Some safety experts played down the long-term impact of the battery problems, saying they should be fixed within months. But even if Boeing recovers quickly from the Dreamliner setback, the FAA’s certification process may be up for review.

Palestinian farmers turn to organic farming in growing back-to-land movement

In an emerging back-to-the-land movement, Palestinian farmers are turning the rocky hills of the West Bank into organic olive groves, selling their oil to high-end grocers in the U.S. and Europe. The move is a reflection of the growing global demand for natural, sustainable and fairly traded products, albeit with a distinct Palestinian twist. The hardships faced by local farmers, ranging from a lack of rainfall to Israeli trade obstacles, mean that organic growing is one of the few ways Palestinians have to compete in outside markets. "The Palestinian future is in the land," said farmer Khader Khader, 31, as he stood among his organic olives in the northern West Bank village of Nus Jubail. Organic farming has grown into a thriving business, by Palestinian standards, since it first was introduced in the West Bank in 2004.

  • The Mean is meant to be an indicator of an individual's average comment sentiment.
  • The Standard Deviation, when there are enough quotes, will indicate an individual's consistency of sentiment (i.e. a Standard Deviation of 0 would mean they were very consistent in their sentiment and 1 would mean they were very inconsistent).

Note that quote stats are likely to be meaningless beyond the aggregate score due to the tiny sample size. However, they are always provided just in case you find something useful there.

Carmel Church, Virginia (CNN) -- At the Flying J truck stop in rural Virginia, truck drivers can taste the coffee, smell the diesel and see the future. The future lies in a remote corner of the parking lot, where workers recently planted two rows of gleaming new fuel pumps. They are labeled LNG -- liquefied natural gas. Though little noticed by the four-wheel public, there is a revolution taking place in the world of long-haul 18-wheelers. Next year, truck manufacturers will begin churning out trucks with new 11. 9-liter engines fueled by LNG -- a fuel that is significantly cheaper than diesel, is abundant in the United States and Canada, and is, arguably, clean. But there's a problem. Currently, there are only about 30 open LNG fueling stations in the country -- many of them clustered in energy-conscious southern California.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- U.S. stock futures trimmed earlier losses Friday, as investors weigh the latest corporate earnings against a stronger-than-expected report on U.S. economic growth. Gross domestic product, the broadest measure of economic activity, rose at a 2% annual rate in the third quarter, according to government data. The figure was higher than the 1. 7% rate economists surveyed by CNNMoney had forecast and came after GDP grew 1. 3% in the second quarter. Investors were also digesting the latest reports on corporate sales and earnings in the third quarter. Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500), one of the most widely held stocks in the S&P 500, reported quarterly results that missed expectations, despite predictions for a strong fourth quarter. Additionally, Amazon (AMZN, Fortune 500) reported a narrower-than-expected loss but missed on sales.
