NEW YORK The "fiscal cliff" compromise, for all its chaos, controversy and unresolved questions, was enough to send the stock market shooting higher Wednesday, the first trading day of the new year. All the major U.S. stock indexes swelled by at least 2 percent in early trading before trimming some of those gains. The Dow Jones industrial average briefly surged to its biggest gain in six months. Stocks around the world also leapt higher. The major indexes in Britain, France and Germany rose more than 2 percent. Markets in Greece and Spain were up more than 3 percent. Stocks in Asia also zoomed higher. In the U.S., the rally was extraordinarily broad. For every stock that fell on the New York Stock Exchange, roughly 10 rose. The Dow briefly surged as much as 273 points in early trading. At noon, it was up 229 points, or 1.

Dairy farmers and industry observers had hoped for their day in court after years of delays in the large class-action suit.

McDonald's settles $700,000 suit over Islamic diet in US

DEARBORN, Michigan –  McDonald's and one of its franchise owners agreed to pay $700,000 to members of the Muslim community to settle allegations a Detroit-area restaurant falsely advertised its food as being prepared according to Islamic dietary law. McDonald's and Finley's Management Co. agreed Friday to the tentative settlement, with that money to be shared by Dearborn Heights resident Ahmed Ahmed, a Detroit health clinic, the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn and lawyers. Ahmed's attorney, Kassem Dakhlallah, told The Associated Press on Monday that he's "thrilled" with the preliminary deal that's expected to be finalized March 1. McDonald's and Finley's Management deny any liability but say the settlement is in their best interests. The lawsuit alleged that Ahmed bought a chicken sandwich in September 2011 at a Dearborn McDonald's but found it wasn't halal -- meaning it didn't meet Islamic requirements for preparing food.

BlackRock: There's hidden value in CASSH

Russ Koesterich, global chief investment strategist for asset manager BlackRock (BLK, Fortune 500), coined the term in a recent blog post. "Because what the financial markets desperately need is another acronym," he said. All kidding aside, Koesterich believes CASSH countries offer hidden value, and recommends investors increase their exposure. Here's why. While they are obviously very different, the CASSH countries have certain things in common that make them attractive as a group, according to Koesterich. Unlike the United States and Europe, the CASSH countries all emerged from the financial crisis in a comparatively healthy state. There is no fiscal cliff or systemic debt crisis in these countries, which generally have balanced budgets and low levels of unemployment. Given the advantage of a strong balance sheet, the CASSH countries are poised to outpace their larger rivals in economic growth next year.

(MoneyWatch) The last 10 years of investing have actually been an emotional roller coaster, fulled of new paradigms that have actually risen from the ashes of the typical method of investing we've been told is dead. In fact, it's thinking any of this nonsense that has proven to be the most dangerous to our portfolios. Exactly what worked in the last 10 years was having the courage to stay with an ordinary, boring investment strategy Right here 's why. A dull method. With only three funds, an investor can have the whole global stock market and a lot of U.S. financial investment grade bonds. How you weight every one depends on how aggressive you wish to be. Below are the three low-cost funds-- I call them the "second grader" portfolios-- and feasible weightings. All three portfolios turned in wonderful returns over the previous 10 years.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The housing market picked up more momentum in August, as the average home price for 20 major cities jumped 0. 9%, according to the S&P/Case-Shiller home price index The increase marked the fifth consecutive month of gains for the index with all but one city, Seattle, recording month-over-month price increases. "The sustained good news in home prices over the past five months makes us optimistic for continued recovery in the housing market," said David Blitzer, spokesman for S&P. The Case-Shiller report is one of many gauges of housing market health that has turned upbeat in recent months. New and existing home sales have been stronger, inventory of homes for sale has fallen and developers have stepped up building activity. Slow improvement in the national economy has also boosted the housing market, as have record low mortgage rates.
